Big things can start from something small and seemingly insignificant or impossible. For one woman, it all started with a pair of pantyhose, some scissors and a bright idea. Today, Sara Blakely is the founder of Spanx. Spanx is an American intimate apparel company with pants and leggings, that has changed women’s lives. Founded in Atlanta, Georgia, it has made Blakely and international success.
Sara Blakely On The Road to Success
In 2012, Blakely was named in Time magazine’s “Time 100” annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She has been listed as one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes. It was not always this way. Before she became the billionaire founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely failed a lot. This is common. Can you believe she tried and did not make it as a standup comedienne? Determined to succeed, she tried and failed to pass the LSAT twice so she could not fulfill and ambiution to be a lawyer. She auditioned at Walt Disney World to be the character Goofy, but did not make the cut because she was too short (they wanted someone 5’8″). She had to be a Chipmunk instead. Sara Blakely was selling fax machines door-to-door when she had the idea for footless pantyhose. Today she presides over a women’s body suit and bodyshaper company that has revolutionized an old idea and found an entirely new market for it. She turned $5000 into billions of dollars.
In this video, she describes at the Inc. Women’s Summit how she patented her invention and landed her first deal with Neiman Marcus.
